How significant is the difference between one player who buys silk with real money and another who doesn't buy any silk?

The game requires you to have a gap between your char level and masteries level, so that enough points can be distributed to those masteries level. But just to clarify once again, at MAX level you still get sp, right? So you can't gimp your character and be unable to finish your build at max level?

Let's say you get to max level with no gap the entire time. Do you stop getting sp and do you therefore end up with less total sp than someone who had a gap the entire time leveling up? A gap gives you more sxp, which gives more sp, which allows you to level your skills. It also gives you less xp, which makes it harder to level with a gap. Okay, so what's a good gap to have?
