i tried going to the normal website and change it but all that did was take me to a new place and i lost my characters, but i need to change my password

okay, i am totally lost here, what exactly are bots? i keep reading and hearing about them, but no where have i seen anything that says what they are. i know about grinding, farming, etc. my two sons play wow and they explained what those things are, but no info on bots. so can someone explain them ...
